WANT MORE DETAILS? HERE’S WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT:
I believe in science-based growing, teaching, and learning over making anecdotal claims because science doesn’t lie. Topics range in complexity from the ability of soil components to bond and host nutrients on their surface through Cation Exchange Capacity or how capillary force and surface tension counteract gravitational pull to cause a Perched Water Table, to as simple as when to water, how to flush, why to flush, and other key fundamentals to further your understanding of what happens below the surface. Participants love gaining an understanding of their soil and their plants based on their new, science-based knowledge.
There are many issues that can be resolved with proper potting media and we’ll talk about how The Chonk remedies them. For example, you should be able to water it deeply without concerns of root rot due to prolonged dry times (by incorporating oxygen into the root zone to inhibit bacteria). You should also be able to run a constant stream of water through it without it overflowing over the top (important for flushing and cleansing the media).
The Dirtshop is centered around the three simple components of The Chonk (wood bark, pumice, and peat moss) and the complex reasons behind choosing them. I'll explain the science and my process for narrowing it down to these three ingredients and why I don't use others (i.e. coco coir (poorer nutrient retention, pH, and microbial life), perlite (floats, discolors, no weight for anchoring plants), charcoal (doesn't provide benefits to containerized gardening that most believe), or worm castings (not a complete fertilizer, not good for aeration/too dense).
The first 45 minutes of The Dirtshop are presentation, and the last 45 are dedicated to questions.
